Polish nationalists raise alarm over alleged migrant handovers and citizen detentions along German-Polish border.

German police detained two Polish citizens at the Lubieszyn border crossing after they joined a self-organized civilian patrol aimed at preventing illegal border crossings from Germany into Poland. The detentions have sparked political outrage in Poland, with conservative figures accusing German authorities of obstructing grassroots efforts to stem unlawful migration.

According to journalist Tomasz Duklanowski, approximately 30 Polish volunteers assembled near the Lubieszyn crossing to begin what they described as a regular citizen patrol effort. “This is the beginning, we will be here every day, and there will be hundreds of us!” one of the participants was quoted as saying in a report that included photos and video of the gathering. Duklanowski reported that two individuals were detained by German police and held for over thirty minutes.

The event drew immediate condemnation from members of Poland’s conservative opposition. “It is clear that the issue of defending the border by Polish citizens alone arouses great anger of the German services,” said Dariusz Matecki, a politician with the Law and Justice (PiS) party. “Poles can thwart their plans!” he added.

Matecki had already been vocal about growing concerns over alleged migrant handovers taking place at the Polish-German border. A day prior to the detentions, he posted a video allegedly showing German vehicles offloading African migrants at the Lubieszyn-Linken crossing, where Polish Border Guard officers then escorted the individuals onto a bus. “In the shadows, there is a mass smuggling of migrants from Germany to Poland,” Matecki said, claiming his sources within the Polish Border Guard report that between 50 and 60 individuals are brought into Poland daily through the Szczecin district. The nationalist Confederation party joined PiS in raising alarms about the situation, directly accusing Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s administration of concealing the true scale of western border migration. Confederation MP Krzysztof Bosak pointed to existing Polish asylum regulations, which prohibit deportation only when an individual is stopped at the state border. Once they cross—even illegally—they can request asylum and potentially avoid removal, he said.

Circulating social media videos appear to corroborate a rise in migrant presence in various Polish towns. One widely viewed clip from Zielona Góra shows groups of African men lingering outside a local school. Parents and residents voiced concern over the scenes. In another video from Szczecin, Matecki confronted a group of Somali migrants who admitted they had crossed the border and were now residing in Poland. Due to the ongoing conditions in Somalia, European Union policy prohibits their deportation.

According to Matecki, the migrants had been given official documents by German border officials before being sent into Polish territory.

Similar accusations have surfaced beyond Poland. In the Netherlands, footage from a florist’s security camera in the city of Venlo—just four miles from the German border—showed what appeared to be German police dropping off a man at 4 a.m. The man was carrying a suitcase and a brown envelope. Local authorities in Venlo, including Mayor Antoin Scholten, admitted to being unaware of the incident and acknowledged they hold no jurisdiction over such matters.

The Dutch Ministry of Asylum later confirmed that such transfers are considered “routine” as long as they conform to EU regulations. Nonetheless, the lack of municipal notification has drawn criticism from local officials and raised questions about transparency and coordination in cross-border migration procedures.

As tensions rise and videos continue to circulate online, pressure is mounting on both Polish and German governments to clarify their roles in the current migration handling along their shared border.
