SPANISH FORK — A fire in Spanish Fork prompted evacuations near The Oaks golf course before crews were able to quickly put it out Thursday.
Jack Urquhart with the Spanish Fork Fire Department said homes on Oakridge Drive were evacuated for about 30 minutes, although the fire never made it there.
A helicopter was on scene dropping water on the fire. It was able to refill at the golf course’s pond, Urquhart said. A canal was also “providing a nice hardline” between the fire and nearby homes, and Urquhart said a lot of firefighters were on scene.
The city of Spanish Fork said the brush fire started on the hillside north of Powerhouse Road. The homes on Oakridge Driver were above the fire.
Officials said the neighborhood was evacuated because the fire started at the corner of their street, and would have trapped residents if it burned quickly.
It was not immediately clear what started the fire, but fire officials on scene said it was believed to be human caused.
