What to know Two firefighters were shot and killed as they responded to a brush fire near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, authorities said. One other wounded firefighter was out of surgery and stable at a Coeur d'Alene hospital late Sunday. The fire appeared to have been set as part of an "ambush," and sheriff’s deputies took active sniper fire, Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said. Authorities said tonight that a man was found dead on Canfield Mountain with a gun nearby. That man is believed to be the shooter, Norris said. Around 300 law enforcement officers, from local to state to federal, responded to the incident, the sheriff said. A shelter-in-place order issued this afternoon was lifted as part of the announcement. Canfield Mountain is in Coeur d’Alene, which is in northwestern Idaho, about 30 miles from Spokane, Washington.
