Jean Pesme, World Bank's new director for Bangladesh and Bhutan

Jean Pesme took charge today as the World Bank's new division director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, bringing over two decades of experience in global development and financial sector reform.
A French national and engineer by training, Pesme joined the World Bank in 2003 and has held senior leadership roles across the World Bank Group, including its private sector arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Most recently, he served as global director for finance, leading efforts to strengthen sound, inclusive, and sustainable financial systems globally.
According to a World Bank press release, Pesme also headed the financial stability and integrity global team, supporting countries in building resilient financial systems that operate with transparency and integrity.
"Bangladesh has repeatedly surprised the world with its innovation and resilience in tackling development and economic challenges," said Pesme.
"I look forward to working closely with the government and people of Bangladesh to sustain inclusive growth."
In his new role, he will guide the World Bank's strategic engagement in Bangladesh and Bhutan, aligning programmes with national priorities while enhancing private sector investment through collaboration with IFC and MIGA.
To date, the World Bank has committed over $46 billion to Bangladesh, which now hosts the global lender's largest IDA programme with $15.4 billion in active support.
