HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island police are investigating a possible drowning off the shores of Waiolena Beach Park on Monday.

Police said officers responded to the beach park at around 12:28 p.m. following a report of a possible drowning.

Police learned that a 51-year-old Colorado man had been participating in scuba diving lessons with his family.

He was allegedly in the water for about 38 minutes before he returned to shore after complaining he was struggling to breathe.

Witnesses told police he became unresponsive shortly after returning to shore.

Police said the dive master and the victim’s family administered CPR where they were met by medics from the Hawaii Fire Department.

The victim was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after admittance.

The victim was identified as Greg Durocher of Castle Rock, Colorado.

Police said they have initiated a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact cause of death. However, no foul play is suspected.
