July 15, 2025:
A 25 year old man from Pierre has been sentenced to life in prison without the opportunity for parole in connection with the November 2023 stabbing death of 17-year-old Evie Maxey in Pierre.
David Shangreaux, Jr., was sentenced on a Second Degree Murder charge Tuesday (July 15, 2025) in Hughes County Circuit Court. He was found guilty by a Hughes County jury in April (April 30, 2025) following a trial that lasted about a week.
Attorney General Marty Jackley says Maxey, who was from Rapid City, was stabbed multiple times in the bathroom of an apartment in Pierre on Nov. 30, 2023.
South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation and Pierre Police Department investigated the case. The prosecution was conducted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office.
April 30, 2025:
A Hughes County Jury has found a Pierre man guilty of Second Degree Murder in the November 2023 stabbing death of 17-year-old Evie Maxey of Rapid City.
25 year old David Shangreaux, Jr., was convicted Wednesday (April 30, 2025) following a trial that lasted about a week. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
Maxey was found with multiple stab wounds in the bathroom of a Pierre apartment after police responded to a disturbance call on Nov. 30, 2023.
“This was a horrendous crime that warranted this verdict.” said Attorney General Marty Jackley. “My heart goes out to Evie’s family and thank you to the investigators and prosecutors for their challenging work.”
South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation and Pierre Police Department investigated the case. The prosecution was conducted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office.
March 24, 2025:
The murder trial of a Pierre man charged with killing a teenager from Rapid City in November 2023 (Nov. 30, 2023) is expected to begin next month.
A court hearing was held last week (March 19, 2025) in the case of 26 year-old David Shangreaux, Jr. He’s charged with First and Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault connected to the death of 17 year old Evie Maxey. She was found with multiple stab wounds in the bathroom of an apartment in Pierre after police responded to a disturbance call.
Prosecutors anticipated needing five days to lay out their case against Shangreaux, while the defense expected to need three days or less to lay out their case. Additionally, the defense withdrew pleas relating to a mental illness defense.
Jury selection is set to start April 23, 2025.
JUNE 10, 2024:
The man from Pierre charged in the stabbing death of a Rapid City teen in a Pierre apartment in November (2023) has been found incompetent to stand trial.
During a competency hearing in April (April 17, 2024), a Sixth Circuit Judge (Kristina Klinger) ruled that 25 year-old David Shangreaux, Jr. was not competent at that time to stand trial for the death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey. He is charged with First and Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.
In court documents, the judge said outpatient treatment for Shangreaux would not be appropriate because of concerns that he is a danger to himself and to others. Shangreaux was sent to the Human Services Center in Yankton for “a reasonable period of time, not to exceed four months.”
Additionally, two lawyers from Sioux Falls have been appointed to represent Shangreaux as his court appointed attorneys. That came after his current attorneys in Pierre asked to withdrawn from the case because the attorney-client relationship had broken down and could not continue.
Trial is tentatively set for mid-August.
DECEMBER 13, 2023:
A 23-year-old man from Pierre man has been indicted (Dec. 12, 2023) by a Hughes County Grand Jury on First Degree Murder and Second Degree Murder charges connected to the Nov. 30, 2023, stabbing death of a 17 year old girl from Rapid City.
David J. Shangreaux, Jr., was also indicted on an Aggravated Assault charge.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Evie Maxey at a Pierre residence continues. Shangreaux, Jr. is being held in the Hughes County Jail on a $300,000 cash bond.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley and Hughes County State’s Attorney Casey Deibert say his next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2024. He is presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
Pierre Police investigated the case with the help of the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and South Dakota Highway Patrol. The case will be prosecuted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office.
DECEMBER 7, 2023:
A $300,000 cash only bond has been set for a 23 year old man from Pierre charged with Second Degree Murder (Class B felony) in the stabbing death of a 17-year-old female last week (Nov. 30, 2023) at his residence in Pierre.
The charge against David J. Shangreaux, Jr., is connected to the death of Evie Maxey from Rapid City. The maximum punishment is up to life in prison, a $50,000 fine or both.
In court today (Dec. 7, 2023), Assistant South Dakota Attorney General Ernest Thompson asked for a $1-million cash only bond while Shangreaux’s court appointed attorney, Justin Bell, asked for a personal recognizance bond.
Thompson said further charges may be coming and alcohol was a factor in this incident. Thompson also set the record straight that Maxey was NOT pregnant, contrary to rumors being circulated.
Shangreaux’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 15, 2023. Should Shangreaux make bond, he will be required to follow several requirements, including that he have no contact with Maxey’s family, consume no alcohol and possess no weapons.

When officers arrived, they found Maxey “cold to the touch and believed to be deceased.” Emergency Medical Services arrived and confirmed she was dead.
During the investigation, officers learned Shanreaux, his live-in girlfriend identified as “L.G.” and Maxey had been “consuming alcohol and socializing” when Shanreaux became intoxicated and began “threatening E.M. with a knife.” L.G. said before she left the residence, she last knew Maxey and Shangreaux to be “in the bathroom of the residence, and that Shangreaux had a knife.”

Charging documents indicate that Pierre Police officers responded to a disturbance call at 9:04pm Thursday at an apartment located at 325 S. Brule Street. When officers arrived, they found the victim already deceased.
During the investigation, officers learned Shanreaux, his live-in girlfriend identified as “L.G.” and Maxey had been “consuming alcohol and socializing” when Shanreaux became intoxicated and began “threatening E.M. with a knife.” L.G. said before she left the residence, she last knew Maxey and Shangreaux to be “in the bathroom of the residence, and that Shangreaux had a knife.”
Shangreaux, Jr. is being held in the Hughes County Jail. His initial court appearance is set for Thursday at 1:15pm CST. The case will be prosecuted by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Shangreaux, Jr. is presumed innocent under the US Constitution.

DECEMBER 1, 2023:
The Pierre Police Department is investigating a death in an apartment building yesterday (Nov. 30, 2023).
Information from the Department says officers were called to a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 300 block of S. Brule Street at approximately 9pm. Upon arrival, they discovered a body. Officers are working to determine the cause of death and a person of interest in the case has been detained.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the South Dakota Highway Patrol are assisting Pierre Police with the investigation.

A year & a half later!! What’s wrong with our justice system? & the family of that young lady have to keep reliving that because it has to be prolonged for this long, how sad!!!!
