CLEVELAND, Ohio – A suspect was arrested and accused of shooting a 26-year-old woman Wednesday in Akron.

Deshawn Jalen Jeffery, 30, has been charged with felonious assault and assault, police said. He is being held at the Summit County Jail.

Akron police responded to the shooting at 4:25 a.m. in the 800 block of Bellevue Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the woman with gunshot wounds to her arm and chest.

Paramedics transported the victim to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Jeffery had fled before police arrived.

Investigators later learned that Jeffery abandoned his vehicle and entered a wooded area in the 800 block of Biruta Street. Following a brief negotiation, police took him into custody.

“We’re extremely thankful that our officers were able to quickly locate the suspect, de-escalate the situation and encourage him to surrender peacefully,” said Lt. Michael Murphy. “Our prayers are with the victim as she recovers from her injuries.”

Jeffery is set to appear Wednesday in Akron Municipal Court. Records do not indicate an attorney for Jeffery.
