‘Senseless act’: Teen killed in North Carolina shooting; joint investigation underway

RED SPRINGS, NC (WMBF) - A teen is dead after a Wednesday night shooting in Red Springs, launching a multi-agency investigation.
Officers with the Red Springs Police Department responded around 6 p.m. to the 200 block of Warren Street for the shooting.
Police found 16-year-old Toney Craige dead at the scene.
“As a parent, my heart is heavy for the family and the community affected by this senseless act of violence,” Red Springs Interim Police Chief Justin Hewett said. “The pain they are enduring is unimaginable, and our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time.”
Hewett asked the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office to join the investigation, and according to the sheriff’s office’s news release, investigators have identified persons of interest in the case.
“The death of this teenager is a tragedy and a senseless act of violence,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said. “The agencies involved in the investigation are committed to conducting a thorough investigation into this crime, as well as any other criminal activity that may be connected to the case.”
Along with those two agencies, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also helping with the investigation.
