PennDOT and local police departments target aggressive driving on Route 65
PennDOT is partnering with several local police departments to tackle the safety issue of reckless and aggressive driving.
On Thursday, PennDOT teamed up with Avalon, Bellevue, Edgeworth, Leetsdale, Sewickley and Ohio Township police for an aggressive driving blitz on Route 65.
It was part of a statewide enforcement wave that will continue through Aug. 17, PennDOT said.
"65 is a busy, busy roadway. There are a lot of police departments that go through it. There are a lot of residential areas there, but it's also somewhat like a highway at times," PennDOT spokesperson Yasmeen Manyisha said. "We see a lot of speeding on this roadway. Unfortunately, we see a lot of crashes."
Police say speeding, tailgating and ignoring traffic signals are the leading cause of crashes across Pennsylvania. The enforcement efforts aim to remind drivers to stay calm and focused behind the wheel.
"Aggressive driving is any behavior you perform behind the wheel that has disregard for your safety and the safety of others on the road. It's on purpose, it is rude and it's just a volatile situation for everyone," Manyisha said.
