Shooting of two lawmakers in Minnesota: Saturday, June 14, 2025

State Senator John Hoffman and State Representative Melissa Hortman, both Democrats, were shot in their homes on Saturday morning. 

- Representative Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in the attack. 

- Suspect wore a law enforcement uniform, but he was not a police officer, as confirmed by the state's Commissioner of Public Safety. 

- Law enforcement exchanged fire with the suspect at the home of Rep. Hortman, which was visited after authorities learned of the attack on Sen. Hoffman

Gabby Giffords sends message of condolences

Former Representative of the US House, Gabby Giffords, who herself was shot in a politically motivated attack over a decade ago, sent a message following news of the attacks in Minnesota. 

The attack on the Hortman home claimed the lives of both Melissa and her husband Mark. Giffords described the Minnesota leader as a friend and a "true public servant." 

"This is a profound loss for all who loved Melissa and Mark, and for our nation," said Giffords, who emphasized the need to reform gun laws to prevent these sorts of devastating events.

On Saturday, June 14, two Minnesota lawmakers, Senator John Hoffman and state Representative Melissa Hortman, were shot in two separate incidents while at their homes. 

Rep. Hortman and her husband were killed in the attack, and while at the scene, law enforcement exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who remains on the loose. Read more about what we know so far in our full coverage

-Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were both killed in the attack that took place at their home. 

- Officials confirmed that the suspect impersonated police to gain access to the leader's home. 

- The two Democratic leaders were targeted, and the state has moved to increase security services for lawmakers. A manifesto that contained the names of other leaders was found in the vehicle of the suspect. 

- Emergency services became aware of a shooting at State Senator Hoffman's home around 2:00 am. Out of an abundance of caution, authorities visited the home of Rep. Hortman because of her elevated public profile. When they arrived they found that he suspect had shot the leader and her spouse, and exchanged gunfire with the agents. He was able to escape, and a manhunt remains ongoing.

The community of Brooklyn Park is currently under lockdown, and residents are advised to stay at home.

Officials warn that if anyone comes to your door claiming to be police, you should be cautious. All police officers will be working in pairs; therefore, if a single person approaches your door, they may be an impersonator. In such cases, police come to your door, and you should call 911 to confirm that those at your home are who they claim to be. A reminder that they will always come in pairs. Do not open the door if you are unsure of who is on the otherside. 

Suspect impersonated law enforcement to gain entry to the lawmakers homes

Commissioner of Public Safety of Minnesota, Bob Jacobson, is currently speaking. He has confirmed that the suspect was wearing a law enforcement uniform, to gain access to the homes of the leaders who were targetted.

A timeline of the attacks begins to emerge

The speakers at today's press conference are clearly deeply impacted by the attacks on the leaders and their families. 

Authorities are reporting that the attacks on Senator Hoffman's home occurred at around 2:00 am. Out an abundance of caution, Rep. Hortman's home was visited by police, who found the suspect at the premises, and exchanged gunfile with the suspect.

On Saturday, June 14, two Minnesota lawmakers, Senator John Hoffman and state Representative Melissa Hortman, were shot in two separate incidents while at their homes. Both of the leaders are Democrats and are said to be in critical condition. Reports emerging about the tragic incidents indicate that both of their spouses were also shot and are receiving medical attention.
